Manual

In analytic comparatives formed with adverbs like more, più, etc., that adverb always modifies the adjective (not a large phrase).

than-phrases have category (S[adj]\NP)\(S[adj]\NP) if adjacent to the adjective, otherwise (S\NP)\(S\NP). They attach after more. If the argument of than is a time adverbial such as today or a year ago, its category is S[adj]\NP.
